Kea (Tzia)

Due to its proximity to Attica, Kea (also called “Tzia”) is easily accessible. A beautiful island, with a scenery variety, consisting of steep mountains, small fields, olive groves, vineyards, valleys, picturesque coves, exciting hiking trails and isolated beaches. On the island with the largest oak forest in the Cyclades, bird-watching is a real delight. For those who are interested about geology, there are plenty of small caves, like in Kalamos and in Agios Timotheos.

Follow the paved paths - total length of 36 - km will lead you to the four city-states of the ancient times: Ioulis, Karthaia, Koressia, Poiessa. In the center of the island is the capital of Kea, Ioulida, built on the site of the ancient city. It is a picturesque village full of traditional houses with tiled roofs, cobblestone streets, terraces, stegadia (roofed courtyards) and many stairs.

The island of Kea is a favorite destination for those who love sailing, mainly due to the short distance that separates it from Attica. The area between Sounion, Kea and Makronissos is called Cavo D’ Oro. Strong winds and currents that converge here from all directions, make it one of the most difficult passages of the Mediterranean. The area is full of shipwrecks. It is said that here sank the Greek fleet during the victorious return from Troy. In the waters of Kea diving enthusiasts can explore one of the most important underwater attractions, the "British" (sister ship "Titanic").
